In The News

I went to see Tyler Perry’s latest film “For Colored Girls” last week. The film is based on Ntozake Shange’s play of the same name and consists of 20 poems. I think TP did an amazing job incorporating art with real life and turning the poems into the personal story of each woman. The women were of all ages, backgrounds, and shades of black. The acting is incredible, if someone doesn’t get an Oscar I will not be shocked, but upset none the less. I recommend everyone go see this movie. It’s an experience within itself however I doubt many men will be taking their woman out to see it. So ladies, feel free to make it a ladies night out. Go see the movie and have a discussion over dinner afterwards.
While there are many bashers of the movie (and TP) claiming that he portrays black men in a negative light I think that’s just a one sided opinion. If you look back at many if not all of TP’s films and play’s there is always the black man who is the “knight in shining armor” and he didn’t let us down in this movie either. Hill Harper’s character was of the model black husband (if anyone one of you knows a man like his character in real life, please send him my way). Let’s face it, whether people like TP and his work or not the fact is he’s relating to millions of people so there must be some truth to his message even if some don’t identify with it.
This movie is a must see, even if you’re not a TP fan. I give it two thumbs up.
